February 27, 2010 Day 2/363

Al- Fatihah - the opening
In the Qu'ran it says: O our Sustainer!
Lay Thou open the truth between us and our people --
for Thou art the best of all to lay open the truth! Al-A'raf 7:89

We are at the beginning of the truth.

The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful what does this mean?

The Most Gracious:

The Compassionate, The Beneficient, The One who has plenty of mercy for the believers and the blasphemers in this world and especially for the believers in the hereafter.
The Most Gracious has imparted this Qur'an unto man.
He has created man: He has imparted unto him articulate thought and speech.
At His behest the sun and the moon run their appointed courses; before Him prostrate themselves the stars and the trees.
And the skies has He raised high, and has devised for all things a measure, so that you too, O men, might never transgress the measure of what is right: weight, therefore, your deeds with equity, and cut not the measure short!
and the earth has He spread out for all living beings, with fruit thereon, and palm trees with sheathed clusters of dates, and grain growing tall on its stalks, and sweet-smelling plants.
Which, then, of your Sustainer's powers can you disavow? Ar-Rahman 55:1-13,

The Most Merciful

The Merciful, The One who has plenty of mercy for the believers.

In what ways have you experienced Allah's attributes of Mercy and Compassion or Graciousness?

February 26, 2010 1/364

Many people get intimidated trying to read the Qu'ran. It is a good idea to have some understanding of history before one begins this endeavor. I also like to recommend to people to read the book The Four Basic Concepts of Qu'ran, by Madudi. It is out of print, but if you can find a copy it covers four terms Rabb, Ibadah, ilah and tawheed. These are really important to understand, and can help with a better understanding when one starts encountering these concepts.

Try to give yourself a set time everyday to read Qu'ran.  Start with 10 minutes and increase until you are reading at least 30 minutes a day. If a set time everyday is too difficult, be flexible but commit to it. Do not sleep until you have gotten your time in for that day.

Make sure you come to your reading with a clear mind. Make ablution and start. If you have a family and commitments to family cause you delay, make the time to read Qu'ran a reading time for all.

Juz 1
Surah Al - Fatiha  meaning the Opening Chapter

In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Praise be to Allah The Cherisher and Sustainer of the Worlds
Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Master of the Day of Judgement
Thee do we worship and Thine aid do we seek
Show us the straight way
The Way of those on whom Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace,
those whose (portion) is not wrath
And who go not astray

We recite this Surah at least seventeen times a day during the obligatory prayers. The repetition signals a real significance to this surah. Let's think about the words and ponder the wisdom behind them. Tomorrow we can look at them in depth with our own thoughts and associations and the tafseer of others. It is important to have our own connection with Qu'ran and not just absorb others.

Relationship with Qu'ran

A very wise mentor of mine recently reminded me of the importance of our own relationship with Qu'ran. It is hard to give to others when we are not giving to ourselves. The nourishment we receive is so important. Over the next year, I am going to track my own progress and invite you to join me.
